What is a folding carton?
A folding carton is made from a single layer of paperboard (duplex, ivory or kraft) that is printed, die-cut, then folded and glued into shape, unlike a rigid box that needs thick board laminated on. The advantages: it is light and cost-effective, ships flat to save storage and freight space, and the large print area lets a brand tell the product story right on the shelf. It is the most common packaging for cosmetics, packaged food, fashion accessories and consumer goods.
Choosing carton board: duplex, ivory or kraft?
| Board | Characteristics | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Duplex | White on one side, grey on the other; stiff and economical | High-volume standard cartons, FMCG cartons, accessory boxes |
| Ivory | White on both sides, smooth surface, good print quality | Cosmetics, food, gifts and premium goods |
| Kraft | Natural brown with a natural paper grain | Brands with a natural look, handmade goods, tea, coffee |
| Coated | Coated surface, vivid print colour | Small cartons that need sharp imagery |
The heavier the board, the stiffer the carton, but the cost also rises. As a rule, light products can use thinner board; heavy products or glass should use thicker board with a crash-lock bottom for better load-bearing.
Common carton structures
- Tuck-end boxes: simple and paper-efficient, a fit for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and small accessories.
- Crash-lock bottom boxes: a strong base that carries heavier products such as bottles and jars.
- Sleeves: a paper sleeve around a tray, for a premium unboxing experience.
- Boxes with windows: a cut-out patched with clear film so customers can see the product inside.
- Boxes with handles: easy to carry, suited to gift sets, cakes and confectionery.
Offset or digital for cartons?
Offset printing gives stable colour and a low unit cost in volume, and is the default for retail cartons. Digital printing needs no plates and suits the case where you need a few finished cartons for photography, for presenting to distributors, or for testing the market before committing to a large quantity.
Finishing for highlights
Matt lamination for an upscale feel and scratch resistance; gold or silver foil for logos; embossing to give a logo volume; spot UV to bring out detail on a matt base. One or two highlights in the right places make a carton distinctive while keeping the cost reasonable.

Folding cartons by industry
Cosmetics
Matt-laminated, foil-stamped ivory cartons for serums, creams and perfume, paired with clear or silver self-adhesive labels on the bottles and jars so the whole pack matches.
F&B: confectionery, tea, coffee and specialty foods
Kraft or ivory cartons printed with product information, Tet gift boxes, and cartons with windows to show off the product. For products in direct contact with food, discuss any liner bag or material requirements with HQPAK first.
Electronics, components and accessories
Ivory and duplex cartons for earphones, charging cables, accessories and small components; combine with shaped PE foam inside and serial and warranty labels as seals.
Fashion and accessories
Cartons for socks, underwear, ties, scarves and accessories, with hang tags and fabric labels in your brand colours.
FMCG and corporate gifts
High-volume duplex cartons for consumer goods, event gift sets and seasonal promotional boxes.
Export goods and household products
Kraft and duplex cartons for household goods, ceramics and handicrafts for export, with PE foam inside so goods do not shift on long journeys.
Tips for a good-looking, economical carton
- Measure the real product and add just enough clearance so the carton is neither too tight nor too loose.
- Choose dimensions that suit the sheet size: a few millimetres can decide how many cartons fit on a press sheet, which directly affects the cost.
- Put key information on the front and side panels, where customers see it when the carton stands on the shelf.
- Avoid heavy solid colour across fold lines unless the carton is laminated, because the board can crack and show its core when folded.
- Reuse the same cutting die across designs of the same size, changing only the print, to reduce cost across a product line.
What affects the cost of folding cartons
The cost depends on quantity, flat size, board type and weight, number of colours, structure, finishing steps and the cost of a die for a new design. Send your specifications through the quotation request form to receive an exact quotation within 24 hours of full specifications.

Frequently asked questions
What does the cost of folding cartons depend on?
The cost depends on quantity, flat size, board type and weight, number of print colours, carton structure, finishing steps such as lamination, foil stamping, embossing, spot UV, window patching and gluing, and the cost of a die for a new design. The larger the order, the lower the unit cost. Send the size and quantity to HQPAK and we will return a quotation within 24 hours of receiving full specifications.
What is the minimum order quantity for folding cartons?
The minimum depends on the structure, sheet size and printing technology for each carton. Small runs and samples can be printed digitally; bulk orders are printed by offset for a better unit cost. Tell HQPAK your expected quantity and we will recommend the most economical option.
How long does it take to receive folding cartons?
Standard orders take 3-7 working days after sample approval, depending on quantity and the number of finishing steps; export shipment timing is confirmed in the quotation. New designs need a cutting die, and cartons with foil or embossing get a specific schedule when the order is confirmed. Rush orders can be arranged separately.
Should I choose duplex, ivory or kraft board?
Duplex is white on one side and grey on the other, stiff and economical, suited to high-volume standard cartons. Ivory is white on both sides with a smooth surface and good print quality, suited to cosmetics, food and gifts. Kraft is natural brown, suited to brands with a natural look. HQPAK suggests board weight according to the weight of the product inside.
What if I do not have a carton layout file?
Just send the dimensions of the product to be packed (length, width, height), the logo and the content. The HQPAK prepress team builds a flat layout with die-cut and fold lines for a suitable structure, sends a proof, and can make a plain sample so you can test the fit before bulk printing.
Where does HQPAK deliver folding cartons?
HQPAK delivers folding cartons to businesses across Vietnam and supports export orders to international markets. Cartons are delivered flat or pre-glued to save shipping space, and delivery can be coordinated with the logistics company you nominate.
